MDHA Meets with Legislative Auditor; Urges DNR to Delay Goal Setting and Management Plan Until Auditor’s Report is Complete

On Friday, May 8, MDHA Executive Director Craig Engwall met with Legislative Auditor James Nobles and his staff regarding the upcoming legislative audit of the DNR’s deer management program. Nobles provided an overview of the audit process and stated that the Auditor’s office would interview DNR staff as well as interested stakeholders including MDHA’s Executive Director and some MDHA participants in DNR’s goal setting process. Nobles anticipates that he will issue a final report in January 2016.

Earlier last week, MDHA sent a letter to DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr setting forth recommendations for certain deer permit areas in the goal setting process that warrant population increases above the 50% maximum allowed by DNR in the process. MDHA also called on DNR to delay both the goal setting and deer management planning processes until the recommendations of the Legislative Auditor could be considered in relation to both processes.
