Investing in the Future: Why MDHA Proudly Supports Minnesota’s Clay Target League

For many years, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and our chapters across the state have believed that one of the best investments we can make is in the next generation of outdoorsmen and women. That belief is why MDHA and its local chapters have proudly supported the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League since its earliest days and why we continue to make that support a priority today.

Last year alone, MDHA and our chapters contributed nearly $100,000 to the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League and local high school trap teams throughout the state. Those dollars represent far more than financial support—they represent an investment in young people, families, communities, and the future of Minnesota's outdoor traditions.

Supporting a Program That Changes Lives

The Minnesota Clay Target League has become one of the most successful youth shooting sports programs in the nation. Thousands of students from communities large and small participate every year, gaining much more than marksmanship skills.

Participation in the program helps young people:

  • Develop confidence and self-discipline.
  • Learn firearm safety and responsibility.
  • Build teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Strengthen family relationships through a shared outdoor activity.
  • Experience success in a sport where athletes of all skill levels can compete.
  • Create friendships and lasting memories.
  • Discover a lifelong passion for hunting, conservation, and the outdoors.

Unlike many traditional sports, clay target shooting offers opportunities for students who may not otherwise participate in athletics. The program welcomes boys and girls alike and provides an environment where every athlete can contribute and improve.

Keeping Minnesota's Hunting Heritage Strong

For MDHA, supporting youth shooting sports has always been about more than competition. The values taught through trap shooting—safe firearm handling, respect, responsibility, and ethical behavior—are the same values that have defined Minnesota hunters for generations.

Many young athletes who begin on a trap range eventually become hunters, conservationists, volunteers, and lifelong supporters of wildlife and habitat. By helping introduce young people to the shooting sports, we are helping ensure that Minnesota's hunting traditions continue for generations to come.

Strengthening Local Communities

The impact of the Minnesota Clay Target League reaches far beyond the shooting range. Local teams bring families together, encourage volunteerism, and create pride within communities. MDHA chapters across the state recognize this impact and have stepped up year after year to help teams purchase equipment, cover fees, improve facilities, and provide opportunities for student athletes.

The support our chapters provide demonstrates what makes MDHA special. We are not simply an organization dedicated to deer and habitat—we are an organization dedicated to people and to preserving Minnesota's outdoor heritage.

A Commitment Since Day One

From the very beginning, MDHA recognized the value of the Minnesota Clay Target League and embraced its mission. Since those early years, our chapters and members have stood alongside coaches, parents, and volunteers who dedicate countless hours to helping young athletes succeed.

Today, as participation continues to grow, so does our commitment.

We are proud that nearly $100,000 was invested in these programs last year, and we are even more proud of what that investment represents—a stronger future for hunting, shooting sports, and conservation in Minnesota.

To every MDHA chapter, member, coach, volunteer, parent, and young athlete: thank you for helping ensure that Minnesota's outdoor traditions remain alive and well.

Because when we invest in young people, we invest in the future.

Helping Make It Possible

The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association's support of youth shooting sports is made possible by our members and supporters across the state. By becoming an MDHA member or participating in our many local and statewide fundraising events—including chapter banquets, gun bingos, raffles, and online sweepstakes—you are helping ensure that programs like the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League continue to thrive. Every membership and every dollar raised helps MDHA and our chapters invest in the next generation of responsible hunters, shooters, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts. Together, we are preserving Minnesota's outdoor heritage and building a stronger future for generations to come.
