When it comes to preserving public landscapes and natural resources of Minnesota, there is no greater ally than the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF). This vital funding source, supported by proceeds from the Minnesota State Lottery, has been the backbone of countless conservation projects for over 30 years. Now, as we stand before a crucial vote to renew this program, it’s time to make a choice that will echo through the state's forests, lakes, and rivers for generations to come.

Fall of course is the most important time of the year for MDHA chapters and members. Deer season obviously, but it is also time to collect hides! The Hides for Habitat program is unique to MDHA and is a celebrated example of recycling. Deer hides donated by conservation minded hunters are turned into wildlife habitat and hunter education. It makes sense utilizing a by- product of our hunt and as a fundraiser, it works! 

Have you ever wondered what the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) means when we talk about habitat? Sometimes, we forget that you’re not in the office with us every day, living and breathing our mission to enhance and reclaim public lands for everyone.

Nineteen yards! That’s where he now stood, a mere nineteen yards away. The countless hours of preparation and mental game planning were about to culminate in the ultimate moment we can all only hope to encounter as bow hunters. All that was needed now was for me to be able to execute the shot. But, before I get into that, let me tell you about what transpired before this moment as I don’t believe this moment was an accident.

Minnesota’s public lands are a treasure trove of natural beauty, offering abundant opportunities for wildlife and recreation. But the preservation and enhancement of these wild spaces require dedicated advocacy and action. Enter the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA), a premier advocate for public land habitat improvement in our state.

Over 30 years ago, Minnesotans voted to dedicate a portion of state lottery proceeds to conservation. Since then, it’s provided over $1 billion for our Great Outdoors. In November, a question to renew this funding will be on the front of every Minnesotan’s ballot. To ensure this critical funding source remains dedicated for the Great Outdoors, over 50% of voters must vote “YES.” Leaving the question blank counts as a “No” vote. If it doesn’t pass, the constitutional protection for this important conservation funding will expire.

The age-old issue with bow hunting in the big woods is finding a way to get those scattered bucks within bow range somehow. In the beautiful, vast, northwoods regions of Minnesota the lure of the wilderness is strong, but the sting of not seeing a deer during an all-day sit can leave a bow hunter with great frustration. 

“The goal is access for all!” was how longtime, dedicated MDHA member Dana Klos of the Thief River Falls Chapter enthusiastically described the goal of the latest in a long string of important TRF Chapter’s projects. 

This October, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) is hosting an exceptional opportunity for both novice and experienced hunters alike. Partnering with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), MDHA is hosting two weekends of mentored crossbow hunts at our state headquarters in Grand Rapids. With over 130 acres of prime hunting land, provided equipment, and expert guidance, this event is set to be a highlight of the hunting season.
